Dive into Rico Jones’ vibes at Brooklyn Vintage’s “Bearer of the Awakening” – a dope, in-person experience!

“Bearer of the Awakening” is saxophonist and composer Rico Jones’ developing suite of original music exploring prayer, ancestry, mentorship, healing, faith, love, and humanity’s relationship with the Creator. Conceived as both a musical journey and a larger poetic statement, the individual compositions form a progression through ideas of spiritual awareness, gratitude, struggle, service, lineage, and the sacredness of life. The music draws deeply from the Black American jazz tradition, moving through swing, blues, gospel, ballads, Afro diasporic rhythms, and open improvisation while emphasizing melody, groove, emotional expression, and storytelling. At the heart of the project is Jones’ belief in mastery in service of expression and in music as a vehicle for prayer, healing, human connection, and the transmission of experience from one generation to the next. For this special Brooklyn Vintage presentation of Bearer of the Awakening, Jones is joined by Daniel Bereket on trumpet, Ricky Jefferson on piano, Anthony Golden on double bass, and Jerome Gillespie on drums.
